Portugal's National Lottery dates back to 1493. The Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa (SCML) became the lottery operator in 1783. The same operator runs the modern national lottery, Jogos Santa Casa, to benefit a variety of health and public welfare groups. The lottery offers traditional drawings, instant lotteries and online products.

Portugese residents may also play the Euro Millions, a European lottery that pools the stakes of participating countries.
